In the early hours of 22nd September 1914, the cruisers Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy were sunk by German Submarine U9 in the North Sea, which was under the command of Otto Weddigen. 837 men in total survived from the three ships. 1459, many of whom were cadets and reservists, drowned.
