On the day he died the battalion crossed the Selle at 06.30am " A very thick fog prevailed, but the companies were immediately met by heavy machine gun fire from which "A" company especially suffered, the company commander ....Lt C W Kidson and several men being killed and a number of officers and other ranks wounded"

Albert was killed in action on the first day of the infamous Somme offensive. The 7th Buffs with the 8th Norfolk to their left and the 7th Queens to their right occupied the foremost section of trench closest to the German line and played a crucial part in driving the enemy back into Montauban and beyond.
